We get it – nothing kills your confidence faster than reaching up to fluff your hair… only to feel those tape-in extensions slipping down like they’re trying to escape. Maybe it happened mid-meeting. Or worse – on date night.

Why Are My Tape-In Extensions Slipping?

Tape-in extensions slipping is a common frustration, especially for first-time users. The culprits are usually:

  • Oily scalp/sebum buildup (breaks down adhesive)
  • Incorrect installation (tapes too close to roots/ends)
  • High humidity or sweat (weakens bond)
  • Low-quality adhesive (salons often use generic brands)

Pro Tip: If your tapes slide out within 2 weeks, it’s NOT normal—you need these fixes.

4 Quick Fixes for Slippery Tape-In Extensions

Tape in extensions slipping

I. Switch to Oil-Free Hair Products

Recommended shampoos: Look for clarifying or volumizing formulas

Avoid: Sulfates, silicones, and argan oil.

  • Using too many hair products, especially those containing silicone or oil, can interfere with the adhesive.
  • Build-up from styling products, conditioners, and even some shampoos can prevent the tape from sticking properly.

II. Tighten Tapes with a Flat Iron

  • Glide a flat iron (300°F max) over it for 2-3 seconds.
  • Be mindful of saunas or other hot environments that can affect the adhesive.

III. Adjust Your Installation Position

Ideal placement:

¼ inch from scalp (not directly on roots).

Avoid overlapping old tape residue (causes slippage).

If too much or too little hair is placed between the tape bonds, the extensions won’t adhere properly.

Ensure the wefts are properly aligned and consider a staggered pattern for a natural look, offsetting each row.

IV. Wash Less Frequently

Rule of thumb

Wash hair every 3-4 days if possible. Washing hair too frequently can weaken the adhesive bond.

Dry shampoo alternative

Use dry shampoo to absorb excess oil, especially if you have an oily scalp.

3 Worst Things to Do When Tapes Slip

Using Superglue

Melts tapes and causes irreversible hair breakage.

Reusing Dirty Tapes

Old adhesive won’t bond properly—always replace slipped tapes.

Pulling Tapes Off Without Solvent

Ripping them out tears your natural hair (leads to thinning).
