It can be worrying to see color in the water when you wash your new Full Shine hair extensions for the first time. You might think the color is faulty or that the hair is low quality. Please don’t panic. This is a common experience and is usually not a sign of a defective product.
In most cases, this is completely normal and can be managed with the right washing techniques. Here is a simple explanation of why it happens and what you can do about it.

Why Does Color Out Happen?
There are two main reasons for initial color out:
This initial color out does not mean your extensions will fade quickly or become a different color. With proper care, you can keep them looking vibrant for a long time.
It’s Just Loose Dye
During the manufacturing and dyeing process, tiny bits of extra dye can sit on the surface of the hair strands. The first wash simply rinses this unused, loose dye away. Think of it like washing a new dark jeans for the first time—some excess color comes out, but the jeans themselves are still dark.
The Hair is Processed
Full Shine extensions are made from high-quality human hair that has been colored to match a specific shade. This process opens the hair cuticle to deposit color. The first wash helps to seal the cuticle back down, and a small amount of color residue may be released.
What to Do When You Wash Them the First Time
Follow these steps to minimize color loss and protect your extensions.

1. Use the Right Water.
Do not use hot water. Hot water can open the hair cuticle and cause the color to fade faster.
- Use cool water. Cool water helps to keep the hair cuticle closed, which locks in the color and adds shine.
- Finish with a cold rinse. A final cold rinse can help to seal the cuticle, making your hair smoother and helping your color last longer.

2. Choose Your Shampoo Carefully.
Do not use a regular clarifying or strengthening shampoo. These can be too harsh.
- Use a color-safe shampoo. Look for a shampoo that says “color-safe” or “for color-treated hair.” These are gentler.
- Use a sulfate-free shampoo. Sulfates are strong cleaning agents that can strip away color. A sulfate-free formula is much safer for your extensions.

3. Make it Quick.
Your first wash should be fast and gentle.
- Wet the hair with cool water.
- Apply a small amount of color-safe shampoo.
- Gently smooth the shampoo through the hair. Do not scrub, twist, or rub the hair roughly, as this can cause tangling and more color loss.
- Rinse thoroughly with cool water until the water runs clear.

4. Add Moisture Back.
After shampooing, follow with a conditioner.
- Generously apply color-safe conditioner, focusing on the mid-lengths to ends where hair needs it most.
- Smooth it through your hair, avoiding rough rubbing to prevent tangles.
- Let sit for 2-3 minutes for the cuticle to absorb moisture and seal.
- Rinse thoroughly with cool water, locking in moisture and shine.

When Should You Be Concerned?
If you see a very large amount of color in the water (for example, the water turns very dark) and the hair itself looks significantly lighter or patchy after it dries, then there might be an issue with the product.
If this happens, you should contact Full Shine Customer Service. Take a picture of the extensions and describe the problem. We are known for being helpful and will guide you on what to do next.
In short, seeing a little color come out during the first wash is normal. It is usually just the extra dye rinsing out. By washing them correctly with cool water and the right products, you can keep your Full Shine extensions looking beautiful and full of color for a long time.
